Some photos of the scarecrow prop redo. In prior versions the post was made from wood and staked down into the ground. The staking portion had to be done minus the head and arms. Wind and rain usually would knock it down a few times prior to Halloween. It had to be taken apart before it could be put back up. A real pain.
The new version outside of the ribs and braches is all pvc. A 4 ft metal post is staked into the ground and the entire assembled prop is slid down over the stake. It can easily be removed if needed.
Great Stuff as usuall with all my props is smeared over everything to give it texture and have it appear rotten. The new scarecrow is much taller and comes in just under 9ft.
Looking at about mid October, the 16th or so for setup. In the meantime enjoying the cornstalks.

I found your blog today after deciding that I NEED to make one of these for my decor. I have been thinking of making this scarecrow for a while now, I LOVE the movie and always loved the scarecrow and thought this year I would make one, did you just use one of those foam pumpkins for the head? Your's looks so great, just like the movie, and I was totally blown away by your hessian figure!!! Real great job.
THanks for sharing all of this.

Thanks, Yes it's an older Funkin. They were made much thicker than they are now.

Your props are great. I would like to create the scarecrow. What did you use to texture the PVC to make it look like wood?
Thanks,

The post of the scarecrow is smeared with Great Stuff prior to painting. About 3/4 of a can's worth.
Its spray painted with Flat Black, Brown, a little red and white.

Dude, you TOTALLY have to make a rotting, undead steed for the horseman. Perhaps one with red eyes...

Fantastic scarecrow! That's a great idea with the pvc over the stake. I like how you disguised the pvc too. I'm going to have to incorporate that method into my future displays.

I never would have guessed that was PVC, that is a great method that looks awesome as well!

Discovered your haunt through Pumpkinrot's blog...and I gotta say I'm impressed! I have a scarecrow I've been working on...but alas, he wasn't done in time for Halloween 2010. I've run into several logistical problems, but many of these it looks like you've solved here! Hope you don't mind if I shamelessly steal your techniques (don't worry, I won't steal your design). PVC is a brilliant idea...although I'm not familiar with "Great Stuff". Is this something you can pick up at a Michael's Arts & Crafts, or is it more of a Home Depot/Lowes kinda thing?

Extremely impressive! I hope I can make mine look even half as good!

Thanks - Great Stuff is found at Home Depot and Lowes.
Once had someone from Dow contact me saying they were interested in showing pics of my work in a section of their website for creative uses of their product. Sent a response but never heard back.

Thanks for responding! Yeah...Dow should come out and photograph your haunt! They could definitely use it to sell their product! Amazing
